Christmas Advert

This is a mock up of a christmas advert we could think about. We could use the season to our advantage to persuade people to buy the album as gift for others. For example parents could buy for their teens.
The poster is of course very rough, I simple mocked it up for demonstration purposes.
I mocked it into a bus stop advertisement to demonstrate all the different possibilities of a huge poster. I thought a bus stop would be a prime location for out advert to be placed, as the bus services are used by people of all ages. Therefore maximising promotion possibilities to a very wide audience.

Winter Pictures Of Location

Today me and Lily went out and took photos of the snowy locations for use in our ancillary. We thought the snow could be an interesting element to the photos, however would not match continuity.
The snow could be used in a seasonal advert/poster as the snow makes obvious connotations to christmas, therefore the poster could suggest the album be purchased as a gift.
I'm currently experimenting with the photos to see how well they work in different forms of the ancillary task we must produce.

Adverts

I like the simplicity of this ad, the polaroid and sepia style background of the graveyard make connotations to the vintage style of the band. I created the background by adjusting the opacity on the photo of the grave yard and laying it over the parchment style paper. I then made the parchment darker by filling it with an opaque black. The fonts keep the ad continuous with the cover and the speech marks relate to the style of on of the inner panels. I think the grave yard in the background makes really good references back to the video, so that the audience can relate to it having seen it on mtv etc. I am not sure whether i like the sepia effect the parchment has given it, so I may experiment further with de-saturation.

Here i have used a similar style only drawn another figure of jordan using the graphics tablet, I prefer the more simple one, but think the colours used on the illustrations make this one more visually interesting, although i think too much is going on in the ad by using a photo and the cover. The illustrations also refer back to the rotoscoping in the video, especially as it is over the grave yard background. The low opacity on the illustration could also allow the reader to question the video, is Hewitson a ghost? which could give them an answer to the questions they asked in the video. I like the contrasting colours of the flowers as this lightens the advertisement, which creates irony with the dull grave yard.

Photos for Ancillary

Today jack and I used the lesson to take photo's for the background of the advertisement. We decided to split off as we both had free's after the lesson, Jack went to take photos of fields and rural landscape, so I went and took photo's of the graveyard.

Here are the photo's which we can hopefully experiment with to create an effective print that ties in with the digipak. It has been snowing so that will create contrast, however miss somell thought it would look picturesque and I don't feel it would hurt to try it out.

before going our seperate ways we bumped into Jordan, he had a scooter and a cigerette which we felt was very ironic and quite rebellious whilst at the same time creating humour, we decided to take a photo, although it is entirely spontaneous and he isnt in any costume etc. I think it works quite well (as a test shot) although if we were to use it we would have to dress it up more.

I took a variety of photos which i feel will work well on the advertisement. some of them are purely to be used as a background giving it texture and others are to compliment the scenery used in the video.

Digipak

I have now printed off a more realistic sized digipak with a reliable printer! i am really pleased with the outcome and this the colours work really well!

Life size digipak. I think both the digipak and tour flyer work really well together! the designs compliment each other making it continuous and both pieces take inspiration from the video which i feel is continued right the way through!

Looking at different CD digi-paks

Today we looked at different digi-pak ideas. We looked at a lot of different CD covers from the genre we are aiming to produce for.

The aged film look on the artwork of this album looks visually appealing, and I think matches the genre very well. I think this is perhaps something I'd like to experiment with.

I think this is very similar to the designs Lily has already developed, so I think we must be on the right lines when it comes to developing our album art work. The designs of this cover is very simple, which I think looks effective.

The elements of this I find interesting is the aged school book/library book look. I think it looks really unique.

Looking at all these different album covers gives me a lot of ideas on how I want my ancillary tasks to look like.
One theme I see running through a lot of these digipaks is the aged look. I think it contributes to the vintage/indie look we are aiming for.

Looking at Print

I was looking on the internet at different prints for bands, some of the prints i looked at i chose because i was interested in the text used and how it was displayed.

On this Madonna Ad they have made the cd cover the feature in the centre/top part of the print. They have then used contrasting colours to display the information underneath. This works well as it does not draw attention away from the cover. It also allows the audience to see a picture of the cover so that if they want to go out and buy it, they are familiar with it.

I love the simplicity of the mumford and sons ad! it uses the artist and album name as the main text on the album, displaying other relevant information in a smaller type face. Some of the other information includes songs that are featured, release date etc. I think a minimal look is definitely more striking, and looks professional. This all contributes to the reputation of the band so the image is really important. The photos are of each band member, however as jordan is a solo artist we do not need to worry about this.

I love the back of the mumford and sons album cover! it reminds me slightly of the one i created. I think the minimal look works best as it allows the consumer to find the track with ease. I like the way the song names are displayed although i think it is easier to navigate as a list.

this Florence and the machine ad creates a glamourous image for the band, however i do not think it is in keeping with the other band prints. I like the use of fonts, and although i do not read the language it is written in, the imformation is minimal and uses techniques to try and sell the album, e.g. "hit album" "brit awards 2010". Florence's album cover also features a similar layout to the one i have used, featuring the artist at the top, and album name below. I think this works well as it is neat, and simple to follow.

Light speed Champion's album also features the typography layout I am using for my Cover, it is very conventional, but looks neat and polished. the simplicity of this layout looks very professional, which is why i think it is a safe style to use.

Illustration

From the post i did about testing illustration, i thought it might be a good idea to test it out to see if it is effective. This will compliment the rotoscoping in the video. Owain used a parchment style paper underneath the rotoscoping so I have incorporated this into my image, however it looked very tea stained so altered the opacity to lighten it. I created the whole image using photoshop and my wacom bamboo graphics tablet. It is different to the way owain drew the rotoscope but i still think it works, I didnt incorporate the black background as i wanted it to make more vintage connotations.

I like this illustration, I like the rugged vintage look of it and the contrast between the subtle flower and the bold outline of the body. It really reminds me of the foals album and this isn't what i wanted to do, as it doesn't make it unique at all, so i prefer the one i made using photography, I might experiment with the typography as this may change the whole image. I used a brush which i downloaded, It is designed to look like it is being brushed on with acrylic paint, hence the uneven lines.

This is the parchment i used to create the background

I based the illustration on this still i filmed of Jordan.

With Text:

I think the text makes it Hewitson River's own and gives it a polish look, i like this more than i thought i would but because the rest of the digipack goes together so well i think i still prefer the other one that i made, although i could experiment with using sepia tones.
