CD Cover Research

When in Leicester recently, I saw a band called Arabella busking and handing out free copies of their EP. Arabella are a small band but quite well-known in the midlands area (Leicester, Coventry, Birmingham). As they would have had a low budget on making their EP and most likely did a lot of it themselves, I thought it would be interesting and useful to see what they included in their CD slip.
The design is very basic but effective, however not the approach we wanted to take with our CD cover as we are set on the idea of using Jordan as our front cover to relate to our video. The front of the CD slip included the 'album' name and the band name which are two things we have included in our draft sketches. Something they have not included that I think would be beneficial to include on our own, is the name of the single they are mainly promoting, in our case 'Big Mouth Strikes Again'.

The back of the CD slip had the track list and the band's website and copyright details. As we are creating a website to promote Hewitson River, this is something we will also include on the back part of our CD cover. The simple style fits well with the front of their CD slip, however such a simple and pain design would not fit with our CD cover. I think something a little plainer than our cover, but with the same colour pallette and prehaps the cover image on a smaller scale, or a similar image, would work best.

Inside of their CD slip, they included small inserts with tour and contact details. I have not seen this used with many bands and think prehaps it could be an interesting thing to include in our work as something a little extra, as it is a great way of promotion and advertising and to get Hewitson's facebook/twitter pages out there!
